Tree Farm, SAF, CSFS Forestry Collaboration Meeting 

*Meet our new Colorado State Forester, Mike Lester!*

Attend the Tree Farm/SAF/CSFS Forestry Collaboration meeting on Wednesday June 26 and give Mr. Lester an opportunity to hear from the best and brightest on the Colorado forestry scene (that’s YOU).

This will be your last chance to meet Mike in an informal setting before he officially starts work as Colorado’s State Forester on July 1st. We’ll enjoy a down home potluck cookout and talk about how we can all work together more effectively.

On June 26, local chapters of the Society of American Foresters, the Colorado Tree Farmers, and the Colorado State Forest Service will host an event to bring professional foresters together with private woodland owners. We will learn more about our respective groups and explore ways in which we can work together to more effectively educate and engage inactive woodland owners and improve the health of our forests.

The event will be held at the Colorado State Forest Service Nursery on the CSU Foothills campus in Fort Collins.

Building Resilient Communities in the Wildland Interface

This project examines recent Front Range fires and uses the 2010 Fourmile Fire in Boulder County as a case study of risk preparedness, response and recovery. Issues like wildfire and flash flood risk and public water supply are reviewed as well as agency coordination, recovery management, community engagement, and mitigation efforts for specific risks.

Beetle Kill Wood Product Reduces Post-wildfire Erosion

Attached is a full-length feature story about a novel type of straw made from beetle-kill Colorado pines, which is intended to help reduce erosion and flooding after wildfires. Rogue Resources Inc., a Steamboat Springs-based forest products business, is now manufacturing WoodStraw® Erosion Control Mulch, thanks to financial support from the Colorado State Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture and The Conservation Fund.

I know, I saw it right away too....  No safety glasses!  No hearing protection!  And I caught something else that is really important:  He has no gloves on.  I might be up in age but I am still sharp as a tack...
